The Halvorsen Heavy Steel and Pressure Vessel Fabrication Project Portfolio

The Halvorsen Company has a large portfolio of fabrication projects. We have designed, engineered and built a wide variety of pressure vessels, heavy formed segments, heavy cones, water cooled hoods and heavy wall cylinders.  To learn more about our steel fabrication processes and pressure vessel fabrication techniques, view the photographs below which were taken at our plate fabrication shop in Cleveland, Ohio.

Heavy Plate Forming

Pictured above are formed plate sections for a heavy railcar project.  A steel service center contracted Halvorsen to form, drill and tap heavy plate components for a large capacity railcar.  Typically this is a “quick turn” order that was delivered on time within 3 weeks.   Our customer picked up their components at our facility in Cleveland and delivered direct to their customer in PA.

Rolled and Welded Cylinders

Halvorsen frequently produces rolled and welded or rolled and tacked cylinders (pictured above) to customer specs.  We typically source our own material, however, the customer is welcome to provide their own.  Cylinders can also be provided with an ASME partial data report and code stamped.  A variety of Non-Destructive Testing procedures are used to ensure welding meets and exceeds ASME, AWS, and or customer Quality requirements.

Pressure Vessel Fabrication

Halvorsen produces a wide range of ASME code pressure vessels (pictured above) for various applications.  We specialize in large custom pressure vessels typically used in Chemical, Petrochemical, Refinery, Power Generation, Rendering, and Storage.  Our capable in-house engineering staff manages complex and demanding projects throughout their production processing at Halvorsen.

Fabricated Gear Blanks

Customers routinely call on Halvorsen for our capabilities to fabricate custom gear blanks (pictured above).  Gear blanks are usually constructed of three main components; a forged high alloy outer ring, a hub forging, and a web plate.  Gears are produced rough turned to customers drawing, welded, stress relieved, inspected using Non-Destructive Examination, packaged and shipped to the customer.   Typical lead times are in the range of 4-6 weeks making this a great alternative to cast or forged gear blanks.

Heavy Plate Weldments and Assemblies

Halvorsen is experienced in producing large weldments (pictured above) used in machinery, Armored Vehicles, Bridge Construction, ASME Pressure Vessels, Furnace Components, Steel Mill service, and other custom projects.  Halvorsen provides the material sourcing, welding expertise, heavy plate forming, machining, blasting and painting, and inspection to make us a one stop shop for large weldment needs.  The unit pictured above was produced as the main body section for a hydraulic press and measures approximately 192” x 156” x 32” and made from 3” thick Carbon Steel plate.  Halvorsen has the ability to confirm machined weldments with our in-house portable CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) accurate to .003” over 12’.  This will ensure proper fit-up to mating components sourced by the customer or final machine assembler. Heavy Formed and Welded  Cones

The cone pictured above is an example of Halvorsen’s capability to layout, cut, form, trim, and fit heavy wall and complex cone assemblies.  Cone assemblies are typically made from plate consisting of 2 to 8 individually formed cone segments.  This example is made from hastelloy plate in eight formed plate segments.  Halvorsen frequently produces formed and welded cones in a variety of materials and thicknesses that include, but are not limited to, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Duplex Stainless, High Nickel Alloys, and High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) in thicknesses from .25” to 6” plate.

Typical applications include ASME cone and toriconical heads, oblong heads, transitions (concentric and eccentric), hot metal ladels, and jacketed transitions.
